University of Portsmouth 2008/2009
Jane Kilford
The AA2A scheme gave me the opportunity to explore methodologies and new approaches in my practice. The resulting work is developing quite differently and with exciting potential. The renewed contact with other media has resulted in ephemeral objects-maquettes made from plaster, wire and paper - laid bare and crumbling. Other pieces use concrete, thinly applied and fragile.
Research into the properties of materials and making, investigate geological and coastal charts to explore marks and erosion.
I have enjoyed time spent in the print room and ceramics with great support from the technicians and I formed a good bond with fellow AA2A artists which I hope to maintain. The materials grant has enabled me to purchase enough quality paper and materials to construct my sculpture and I am looking for a suitable site to place this work.
Out of the AA2A work I have several other projects being developed for proposals - 'Burning Your Boat' using hundreds of matches and an old ironing board - 'The Oracle Coracle' made from green florist wire and bougainvillea bracts and 'I Wish I Was a Skipper', a poetic boat containing words of ideas and sea dreamings.
The positive benefits of participation in the AA2A has been in providing me with the space, time and support to re-examine my approach, to invest in new work and to engage with the students and staff at the University, elements I particularly enjoyed.
