University of Salford 2008/2009
Peter Good
During my recent AA2A at Salford University I painted and stitched fabrics using a combination of machine and hand techniques. AA2A staff and facilities have enabled me to access the ways of making, and appreciation, of woollen fabrics, using various machines. Thanks to AA2A staff, I have recently been able to think about sculpting bespoke designed fabrics.
I work with woollen fabrics for their understated texture and I’m presently machine- and hand-stitching computer-manipulated designs taken from sketchbook drawings.
Surreal imaginings and melancholic thoughts inform sketchbook images and printmaking. My sketches sometimes influence my fibre work, but I am more influenced by materials I use.
I’m aware of the male taboo that it isn’t ‘right’ for men to sew, and also that some women feel fibre is their preserve.
The accompanying image is of “Cream 1” which uses a repeated motif taken from sketchbook drawings. These materials are fairly sensitive to moisture, oils, cutting or general carelessness, but the important qualities of fibre are its strength and fragility.
I’m also working with printmaking, painting and sculpture, which has recently come into my frame of reference.
During AA2A, I produced a large sketchbook of fabric samples which I reference for ideas for larger work. I was able, by producing a body of fibre experiments, to learn about the relationship between prescriptive and intuitive methods of making, which is something I intend to look into further in my practice.
I am exhibiting, along with fellow AA2A artists, at Salford University this autumn, which will be a great chance to have my work seen.
The technical staff and students at University of Salford have been accommodating and I would not have been able to reach this stage in my career without their help. I have gained in confidence from participating in the AA2A scheme.
