How many lines make a symbol? How little is needed to reference a reality? Is 3 enough? The context is the key element for us to make sense of limited information. Is the same true of ideas? Is 'stick a bow on it' sufficient to inspire us to think about the processes we are going through as creative people?

When I worked with some young people who were trying to evidence their Arts Award work as artists 'beyond words', we eventually conceded that a few key words might be necessary. With that permission, they spent time carefully considering which one or two words expressed their thoughts adequately; the results were far more clear than pages of sentences written under duress.
