The New Hall Art Collection, Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge

On 13th March (Friday, but not unlucky this time!) I was fortunate to take a curator led tour of the New Hall Art Collection, the largest collection of women’s art in Europe.

Our guide, Harriett Loffler, was passionate and knowledgeable about the collection which includes over five hundred works by international artists - including Judy Chicago, Maggi Hambling CBE, Lubaina Himid, Dame Paula Rego, The Guerrilla Girls and Cornelia Parker RA.

Harriett discussed the challenges of caring for a collection that is housed across all parts of the college including accommodation, offices, the bar, gardens and dining room. I would highly recommend listening to her talk, given to the Royal Drawing School and recorded in 2019, which also explains aspects of the college in which the collection is housed -

More importantly, if you are ever in Cambridge the collection is open to the public and a self-guided tour is available from the Porter’s Lodge. The collection was accredited by the Arts Council England in 2018.

Please take a look at my Image Album which features my pictures of the amazing works in their equally amazing setting.
