During my time on AA2A I will create a new body of work comprising sculpture, print, film and sound work inspired by Sunderland’s industrial heritage. I will use analogue and digital facilities to explore my interest in the interconnectedness of domestic and industrial labour, and its transgenerational legacies. I am particularly interested in Sunderland’s relationship to labour in the spheres of traditional production industries and the similarities this physical work shares with art production in our increasingly digitised society.
Being ‘hands on’ while making artwork is incredibly important to my practice, so to be able to work directly with facilities to create and experiment will provide me with an invaluable opportunity to develop my practice. I greatly value the social, communal and pedagogical side of art making, so I am delighted to be working alongside students and sharing skills and ideas with each other.
Since August 2023 I have been working on a self-initiated creative research Past and Future Pact, for which I have been selected as a remote Artist-in-Residence for DePOT (Deindustrialization and the Politics of Our Time), an international research council partnership examining the historical roots and lived experience of deindustrialization. AA2A will support me in creating work for this project and I will be seeking opportunities to share and discuss my work with the creative community in Sunderland as it develops.
