I am a sculptor who loves to work in wood using a mixture of traditional and carving techniques and contemporary approaches to produce sculptures which combine the natural beauty of wood with other materials which speak about the experience of being human.
Since the early days of humankind wood has been used in many ways to produce items that are functional, used for adornment and to communicate significant spiritual, social and emotional ideas. The experiences we have as humans increasingly drives my work.
My carving inspiration comes from researching the history of carving and modern day sculpture from around the world. I blend ideas with thoughts on love, relationships and how we grow as humans to produce pieces that symbolise my feelings about humankind.
Sculpture is a language of light and shade, shape and form, symbolism and emotion. I have been excited to add the use of colour to the language of my work. The opportunity to study as part of AA2A would enable me to develop this language further, increasing the use of repurposed wood and metal and different finishes in my work. I would like to increasing the scale of my work and produce work that would be exhibited more widely. I hope that this opportunity will and lead to further study.
