This video work is the first outcome from an ongoing body of work entitled 'Mutations'. The work is layered with ideas and imagery from diverse sources, collected and transformed over time. Using the body as fact and fiction, a familiar and yet strange presence, the work explores duality and metamorphosis, the unnatural and unseen. Drawing on the symbolic languages of science and mythology the work peers through the looking glass into another world somewhere between the familiar and the unknown where the body is transformed.
The work has been specially developed using fulldome technology for the hemispherical viewing environment of planetarium domes. The work features a commissioned 5.1 soundscape created by Nick Able and Benjamin Freeth.
‘Mutations’ was conceived during a residency with the Medical Research Council's Virology Unit in Glasgow. It was developed during residencies with Allenheads Contemporary Arts (Northumberland), and Dance City (Newcastle) and through movement research with Wendy Erickson and mentoring from Fiona Wright.
