Perspective Studies

These are experiments in curving perspective. 'Study 1' is a coarsely pixelated landscape used to provide a non-random array of colour blocks over which a tonal gradation is imposed to distort the picture plane, darker values to the left and right edges and lighter in the middle. The idea is that the edge comes forward and the middle recedes. If you like you can half close your eyes whilst looking at the painting and the pixelation disappears to reveal the landscape.

'Study 2' shows a scene on the River Thames where towards the left and right edges the perspective is curved, again to convey a sense of the painting wrapping around the viewer.

Both paintings have been produced as a result of the Residency. More are on the way!
