AA2A Resident Artist

Amy Stubbs

Schemes:

I am a York-based textile artist specialising in surface pattern repeat design. My work focuses on creating vibrant, hand-drawn patterns that are digitally printed onto fabrics such as silk and linen, which are then transformed into home furnishings, fashion accessories, and wall art. My designs have been applied to items including lampshades, cushions, silk scarves, and other decorative objects.

I enjoy experimenting with a wide range of materials—acrylic paints, pastels, Indian inks, and collage—to develop initial pattern ideas. Each design begins with hand-drawn artwork, which is then scanned and refined digitally to create precise, seamless repeats. This combination of traditional and digital processes allows me to maintain the expressive qualities of handwork while achieving professional-quality finishes.

My practice is deeply inspired by nostalgia and family heritage, particularly mid-century fabric design and its bold use of colour blocking. Through my upcoming residency at York St John, I aim to further explore the intersection of print, photography, and experimental techniques, developing a body of work that reinterprets vintage aesthetics and creates objects that feel both timeless and contemporary.
