‘I seek to shift the perception of sound, to take interest in the unremarkable hum that continually occurs. To me, the energy that is sound never dissipates, it bends and traverses our surroundings, taking new forms throughout its journey.’ Ella Georgiou’s practice deals with the endless ways in which we can receive, create and understand sound. Her process normally starts by extracting and recording mundane or hidden sounds: for example, background noises or the almost indistinguishable sound generated by etching processes. The spectrograms or visual representations of those sounds over time are then translated into graphite drawings and etchings. Georgiou engages with sound and silence as a catalyst for human interaction through her work; she invites audiences to stop and contemplate their own relationship to their surroundings.
