Eugene Schlumberger is a photographer and artist based in Sunderland. His work, frequently produced in response to music, film and architecture, has been described as occurring ‘in the space where the shadow of popular culture falls on concrete surfaces.’
This led to him working with the designer of the Hacienda, Ben Kelly, and Factory Records’ graphic designer Peter Saville, to publish Hacienda Landscapes, a book which combined Schlumberger’s photographs of industrial landscapes referencing the design of the Hacienda with Kelly’s archive of the design and construction of the club. His work has also been used by the independent Tonn Recordings label on various of their releases.
Schlumberger has also published two volumes of photography with The Modernist Society in Manchester which investigated how memory is triggered by colour in urban and industrial spaces.
Having often felt like he experiences life with a detached view, as if from behind glass, he has more recently been investigating this in his photography. A recent cancer diagnosis has exacerbated his feeling of being ‘here yet not here’ and this has become a focus of his work.
