AA2A Resident Artist

Kirushan Sivagnanam

Schemes:

Kirushan Sivagnanam (He/Him) is a visual artist originally from Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, now based in Liverpool, Merseyside, UK. His work is grounded in lived experience, especially the personal and internal effects of displacement, transformation and the ongoing questioning of identity. These elements form the emotional and conceptual foundation of his creative process.

Kirushan works across performance and mixed media, guided by the relationship between body, memory, space, and material. He does not limit himself to one fixed form. Instead, each work evolves in dialogue with its environment shaped by place, atmosphere, and emotion. His approach is deeply intuitive and process-led, prioritising presence and resonance over final product.

His practice investigates questions of the climate crisis, borders and the enduring influence of colonial systems on contemporary structures particularly the inequalities embedded within global economic systems. Through embodied gestures and spatial reflection, his work invites shared contemplation rather than fixed answers.

Kirushan holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Special Degree) in Sculpture from the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. He has exhibited across Sri Lanka, India, and the UK. His solo exhibitions include Pillow of the Village (University of Jaffna, 2016), Landscape (Kolkata, 2019), and Nightmare (Williamson Art Gallery and Museum, Birkenhead, UK, 2023). Group exhibitions include Being and Becoming (Saskia Fernando Art gallery, Colombo, 2018), Lost (Celebrate Colombo), Thisaikal (University of Jaffna), Tamil Heritage Month Kingston group show, London), the Liverpool Art fair, 2024), Ecological Border (Seesaw, Manchester, 2025), and Druden haus collective Group show, Liverpool, 2025)

Kirushan’s performance works have been widely shown, including Bed of Capitalism (Williamson Art Gallery, 2023), Sacrifice (2022), and multiple site-specific and collaborative works with Theertha International Performance Platform in Colombo and Jaffna between 2017–2019. His work often uses repetition, stillness, and physical presence as tools for reflection and emotional dialogue.

In 2025, he has selected for the Chester Cathedral Two-Year Artist Residency in the UK. He is also currently collaborating with Merseyside-based artists through the SoloArt 31st Festival Residency Programme, where the focus is on exploring borders and identity through shared, process-based practice. Alongside his independent practice, Kirushan also worked as an Assistant Art Therapist with Heart4refugees, where he supports inclusive, trauma-aware creative environments through art workshops and community engagement.
