My practice is rooted in installation, sculpture and painting, and encompasses education, social engagement, curation and arts production. My work is motivated by the shifting political, ideological and socio-economic climate, as viewed through the lens of a mother of two girls. I am keenly aware of the need for a paradigm shift, and through my practice, invite contemplation of the systemic failings which surround us and invite consideration of a more ameliorate future. I am interested in issues surrounding women’s labour, particularly relating to motherhood and the mental, physical and societal implications of this state. I am the founder of MOTHEROTHER, a self-initiated Arts Council England funded research and social practice project which arose from my frustrations as a mother returning to art practice after an extended period away from the artworld. During the AA2A residency I wish to draw upon research aspects explored via MOTHEROTHER. I am particularly interested in the impact of feminist politics and patriarchal constructs on the social conditioning and how this shapes the sense of self in relation to care. I’m also concerned with the matrescence - the changes that occur during the process of pregnancy and birth - and in exploring its equivalence in other care relationships. I want to push my practice into new areas and media as these ideas evolve and this opportunity will give me access to the facilities, expertise, equipment and environment to make that shift possible.
