AA2A Residency Application Guidance

This guide is designed to help you complete your AA2A residency application. It explains what hosts are usually looking for in each section and gives tips on the type of information you might want to include.

General Advice

  • State your objectives – Be clear about what you want to achieve during the residency. If you already have a specific project in mind, outline it clearly. If not, explain the type of work you want to develop, the processes you hope to explore, and which facilities or equipment you’ll need.
  • Think local – Hosts are more likely to select artists who live relatively close to campus, as this makes it easier to meet the required hours and engage regularly with students.
  • Pay attention to the word counts – Several questions include suggested word counts. You don’t need to stick to them, but you may find them to act as a useful guide.
  • Be clear and concise – Keep your answers focused. Hosts want to quickly understand your practice, your plans for the residency, and how you will use the time and facilities.
  • Be honest about your experience – While you’re not expected to be an expert in everything, hosts can only provide limited technical support, so it's important they know what you're confident doing.
  • Be realistic about your availability – Make sure you can commit to the minimum 100 hours on campus and be honest about other work or personal commitments that might affect your time.
  • Think about the students – Hosts are keen to know how your presence will benefit their students, both in arranged sessions and informally.

Use of AI

You are welcome to use AI tools (such as ChatGPT or similar) to help you plan or structure your answers, improve grammar, etc., but we strongly discourage you from using them to write your entire application. Hosts want to hear your own voice and understand your ideas directly from you. Applications that feel overly generic or lack a personal touch are much less likely to be considered.

Residency Terms

Finally, all applicants should make sure they have read the terms and conditions page (we promise it’s not too long!) before applying. It outlines key details about what the residency provides, the commitments expected from artists, and the general rules the scheme operates under.
