AA2A Resident Artist

Aliyah Hussain

Schemes:

I am a multi-media artist exploring themes found in feminist science fiction (FSF), speculative storytelling and decolonial narratives. With a background in performance and a practice rooted in collaboration; I work across ceramics, sound and collage. Recently I’ve been developing ways to craft sound in a physical way, by creating my own abstract handbuilt ceramic sculptures to use as instruments. I use contact microphones to record and compose elements for ambient soundscapes.

I’m interested in the connection between ceramics and sound and how the material can be shaped into sculptural instruments. I create soundscapes to accompany stories - pulling sounds from written worlds in the form of foley as well as using traditional and non-traditional instruments. My soundscapes are usually made in collaboration with other artists, acting as soundtracks for their Sci-Fi influenced VR animations or computer games.
