Be Andr is a Norwegian artist based in London, working across painting, sculpture, language and computational processes. He completed a PhD in Arts and Humanities at the Royal College of Art in 2024 and is currently an Honorary Postdoctoral Fellow at the RCA’s Radical Matter Research Centre.
At the centre of his practice is an ongoing exchange between computational systems, physical materials and human action. His System of Emergent Touch (SET), developed through his doctoral research, begins with digitally generated structures that are translated by hand into paintings. In this movement from code to paint, the work emerges through an encounter between computational precision, material behaviour, touch and bodily gesture.
Recent work begins with fragments of the natural world—plants, bark, leaves, growth and decay—which are translated through code before emerging as paintings. Alongside these, Andr is developing a body of text-based sculptures that approaches the same enquiry through language. Words and fragments develop from the paintings and their organic sources and are transformed through computational processes into physical structures that overlap and intersect. As the viewer moves around the sculptures, words appear, overlap and dissolve, shifting between legibility and abstraction. The sculptures do not explain the paintings; when the two encounter one another, image and language change how each can be read. Across both bodies of work, Andr explores how technology might not distance us further from nature, but instead make us look again.
