AA2A Resident Artist

Joanna Mamede

Schemes:

Joanna Mamede is a Brazilian artist and filmmaker based in the UK. Her work explores notions of difference, language, and identity by using symbolism and motifs. Experimenting with text, graphics, and narrative codes her films and installations exist beyond genres to reveal spaces in between and the structures that hold them.

Selected screenings and exhibitions of her works include: Aesthetica Film Festival, Future Now Symposium, Videobardo, Mientras Tanto Cine, Festival Ecrã, Gstaadfilm, Berlin Revolution, Rich Mix, Depford X and Tate. She has an MRes Art: Moving Image Degree from Central Saint Martins, where her research 'Transbordo: The Fear of the Other Word', analysed how women artists use text on screen to deconstruct oppressed language systems. Passionate about art, politics and social change, she is also a Trustee at Lux Moving Image, Equalities Work in the UK, and is part of ICCG, Institution that manages Gilberto Chateaubriand's Brazilian Modern and Contemporary Art Collection.
