Tracey Brown is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Chester, UK. Her work moves fluidly between photography, drawing, painting and printmaking, to create suggested narratives which remain deliberately open, fluid, and negotiable, encouraging the viewer to create their own emotional connections and locate their own understandings and memories. Rather than presenting an unambiguous, unquestionable storyline, she attempts to portray the feeling that there is multiple stories constantly unfolding which aren’t necessarily obvious at first glance. The story that’s felt before it is even understood, undeniably present yet not wholly decipherable. She includes discernible traces of environmental tensions, clouds, smoke, bomb-like ruptures which appear to be on the brink of impact and violence, creating a widespread sense of foreboding.
“My current work contains fragments of bodies, clothing, and personal possessions that are drawn, painted, distorted and disrupted, creating interruptions which constantly challenge ideas of meaning and recognition. The search for the ‘story’ continues but it purposely remains partially unknown and obscured. My physical practice of painting & printing is ritualistic in nature, as I layer, scrape, and manipulate surfaces in order to produce images which reflect the encroachment of the past upon the tensions of the present. Meaning is physically scratched out, smeared, and erased to further express a purposeful tension between any discernible figurative elements and the overall emotional implications of the work.”
